I'm just not le boy crazy
I might be the only one in this camp, but I just can’t get behind the Chanel boy. While I think its a beautiful bag - the price, construction and wear and tear just isn’t worth it to me. If you are looking for the perfect boxy crossbody bag, before you jump on the boy train - here are some alternatives.
Probably the most notable contender, is the very similar looking Diorama bag. The handbags are almost identical in size and construction - the biggest difference the PRICE. The Diorama is priced at £2,600, while the boy is £3,750 (July, 2019). The chain on the Diorama is also hollowed out, giving it a lighter feel. The Diorama features the large canage design across the front, and is made in a variety of colours and leathers similar to the boy. Unlike the boy the logo is less prominent, and those who aren’t luxury enthusiasts probably would not know which designer the bag belonged too.
Saint Laurent Sunset Bag
This boxy crossbody, has an even more attractive price point at £1,540. The sunset has the classic Saint Laurent chain - which is a thin, heavy and shiny. Its bold YSL hardware on the front makes it unmistakably recognisable as a designer handbag. The inside of the bag is fitted with two large pockets and one smaller one - perfect for a person who likes to organise their belongings into compartments. Its best feature is its slip pocket on the back, which fits an Iphone plus comfortably. My personal favourite leather the bag is made into is a croc embossed shiny leather, which is robust and shows little signs of wear.
Still not convinced? Heres my last pick, the Gucci Dionysus - which depending on the size can be worn crossbody (the Mini). The construction of the chain is similar to that of the boy, even the thickness is on par. It's an extremely structured bag which gives off the young trendy look that the boy usually is associated with. This bag has insides fitted with dividers to make two large compartments, similar to the Sunset bag. Coming in at an attractive price point of £1,510.
Probably the biggest con in my eyes for the boy bag is the fact that its price doesn't translate into quality. The bag gets serious corner wear, and the bottom starts too sag. Its quality just isn’t as illustrious as other Chanel bags, which makes me wary to add it to my collection when there are so many logical alternatives.
